Hidden With Christ

By: Joy Adewumi [Osun State, Nigeria]

Tamuna woke with a start, breathing heavily.

Her clammy, wet clothes clung to her body despite the cool night. She’d had another nightmare.

She could picture her mom’s full vibrant smile, like the one that followed a joke Tamuna had told just before a drunk driver ran into their car. With every nightmare she wondered if she would ever survive another car ride without throwing up, if the shock of her mom’s death would haunt her forever.

Your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:3b (NIV)

She closed her eyes and muttered, “Jesus, help me.” Almost immediately, a faded memory resurfaced. Years ago at church, Mummy Badru had said, “Children, imagine you have a key in a small box hidden inside a bigger box. The small box is strong, but the bigger box is stronger. How safe is that key? Yes, very safe. When the Bible says we are hidden with Christ in God, remember the key. Nothing in this world is bigger or stronger than God—and we belong to God.”

Tears flowed down Tamuna’s face as she repeated over and over, “I am hidden with Christ.”

PRAYER: Thank you, God, for carrying us through the pain and grief of trauma. Give us courage to believe your promises to be with us and to keep us safe.

Reflect

Our experiences—good and bad— shape us, but they do not have to define us. We can find ways to feel safe. We can talk to people we trust to help us move toward healing and even forgiveness. No matter what happens, we can allow God’s love to fill us and to make us whole.
