Born with fetal alcohol syndrome, Mandy was developmentally delayed and required the constant attention of one the counselors. But she loved being at camp and singing camp songs. During the week, Mandy and her counselor would walk around camp singing at the top of their lungs. Mandy didn’t always get the words quite right; but I will never forget the time she sang a rocked-out version of “Jesus Loves Me” (“Jesus loves me, he who died / heaven’s gates to open wide”) like this: “Jesus loves me, OPEN WIDE!”
I ask that your minds may be opened to see his light, so that you will know what is the hope to which he has called you, how rich are the wonderful blessings he promises his people.
Ephesians 1:18 (GNT)
Jesus loves me, so on the cross he opened wide his arms to welcome all those, like me, who are lost and broken. Jesus loves me, so he opens wide my heart so that I too can welcome people the rest of the world chooses to ignore. Jesus loves me—and you—so we can open wide our eyes to see ourselves and others as we really are: God’s beloved children.
JESUS LOVES YOU! When has the good news that “Jesus loves me” sunk into your heart in an unforgettable way? How will you practice opening your heart wide enough to love as Jesus loves?
