Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.
2 Corinthians 6:14a (NIV)

As a child, I was told that when I began to date, I should not be “unequally yoked” to my boyfriend. At times I wondered what difference it would make if I dated someone who didn’t share my beliefs. I would not abandon my faith—or so I thought.

Then I began a relationship with a guy who claimed to be a Christian. Sure, he went to church; but his life outside of church was a different story. Not that I was perfect, but he never talked about his faith and didn’t live the way my other Christians friends did. As I grew closer to him, I began to get used to his “different” lifestyle. Before I knew it, I was doing things I knew would displease God. Finally, I stopped praying.

This was a difficult time for me. I realized why being in a close relationship with someone whose beliefs and lifestyle don’t match our own is challenging. Although these relationships may provide opportunities for us to be a witness, they also may tempt us to turn our back on God. As we choose who we will date, let’s be sure to remain true to our faith.

BEGIN YOUR DAY WITH GOD: This week, choose a scripture verse or a prayer to begin each day. This time with God will help you stay true to your beliefs when temptations or challenges arise.

Think About It

If we can show others how God is at work in us, maybe the way we live our faith will enable them to find God.
