Open To All

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love.
Ephesians 5:1–2a (NIV)

While studying in Sweden, I encountered many young people who did not believe in God. I grew angry that they could be so narrow-minded; and my anger distracted me from my own faith—until recently.

I was sitting in a classroom with a group of friends, doodling and listening to music. The girl selecting the music was playing a lot of annoying pop songs. Then all of a sudden, a peaceful, serene tune began; and the two of us started humming along in unison. I checked her phone; and sure enough, the song was Hillsong’s “Oceans.” And she knew every word!

Surprised, I asked how she knew this song. She said she had heard someone cover another Hillsong tune on Instagram and got into their music. Then she explained to the other girls that “Oceans” was a Christian song, but she loved it. As the girl I thought to be the least religious of us all sat there singing Jesus’ name, I realized that God truly has ways to reach everyone—and God’s arms are open to all.

PRAYER: Thank you, God, for loving us as your children and for reaching out to us in so many ways. Help us to be the music of your heart to all we meet. Amen.

Try It

Nothing good comes from boxing ourselves in or closing ourselves off. This month, let’s practice keeping
our hearts and minds open to all the amazingly different people, places, and things God has created.
