Quieting Our Minds

By: Amelia Nguyen [Marietta, NY]

Whenever we experienced a lapse in our conversation, one of my friends would shout, “For Narnia!”

Then we all would laugh, and the conversation would pick up again. We thought there was never supposed to be any silence between us.

For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him.
Psalm 62:5 (NRSV)

In our world today silence is rare, almost impossible to find. We can always hear some sort of noise—phones ringing, people talking, dogs barking, music playing. All this noise makes it hard to focus. How are we supposed to be still and quiet?

Maybe silence and stillness aren’t defined by volume or environment; maybe they are a mindset. Turning off the noise and closing the door may be only half the battle. We may also need to quiet our minds.

MAKE IT A MINDSET: Are you uncomfortable with silence? Do you try to fill quiet moments with conversation? Make time today to get away from the noise. Focus your mind. Quiet your soul. Be still. Seek to know who God is. And let this time of silence be broken only by the voice of God.
