The Dance of Giving

By: Eily Toon [Mount Vernon, IN]

Jesus crafted a meaningful dance for his followers—

a dance with a leader and a follower, in which both roles reflect God’s sacrificial love. Jesus is the Son of God, the one who deserves all honor; and yet he gave up everything to give us life! He leads us by example. He washes our feet. He bestows honor upon us.

If your Lord and teacher has washed your feet, you should do the same for each other. I have set the example, and you should do for each other exactly what I have done for you.
John 13:14–15 (CEV)

Imagine entering a room where the head of the household gives you the best seat in the house—his own chair. I don’t know about you, but I would be thinking, I don’t deserve this. This is his rightful spot. Shouldn’t I refuse? Yet, in accepting the seat, the dance would be complete—the guest would be honored and the host would be given the chance to imitate the example of Christ.

Sometimes we need humility to accept a gift, but the giver is also blessed by giving. As we accepted Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, let’s take the seat offered to us and join in the dance of giving.

SCRIPTURE SEARCH: Make a list of scripture passages in which Jesus sets an example of giving, such as washing the feet of his disciples. How will you follow Jesus’ example this week? in the New Year?

30 Seconds of Thanks

Take 30 seconds to make a mental list of as many good things in your life as you can. As you acknowledge the source of these gifts, you might feel a deep sense of wonder and excitement building up in you, ready to burst out in gratitude. If so, close your 30 seconds with a shout of gratitude.
