Winds of Change

By: Jacob Herald [Austin, IN]

Looking at all the problems in the world, I often wondered, How can I change things? I am only one person.

Then I read John 3:8 and began to consider the power of wind. Wind is a mighty force that can change an entire landscape. When we stand outdoors and feel the wind sweep by, we can’t tell where it comes from or where it might be going. Yet we can see its effects all around us as it rustles through the trees and shakes up our surroundings.

“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
John 3:8 (NIV)

With God’s spirit living in me, I hope to become like the wind so that my past no longer defines me and chains no longer bind me. Like the wind, I want to be able to change my surroundings. With God’s power, I believe that you and I can change our homes, schools, and communities for the better.

WORK FOR CHANGE: How can ordinary people like you and me make the world a better place? We can make small decisions every day that will touch lives in positive ways. Together, we can undertake plans to make a difference on a larger scale. With God’s help, we have the power to tackle some of what is wrong in the world and make it right. How are you working for change?

Keep it Simple

I remember the people who have offered a hug when I needed one, who have smiled at me or spoken kind words that made me feel valued. Perhaps their kindnesses felt insignificant to them, but they have meant the world to me. In the same way, we can be generous with our time and our gifts. We can bless others with something as simple as a tissue or a listening ear. We can write a note or speak words of encouragement. Who needs your help today?
