Worrying

By: Alina Kanaski [Tucson, AZ]

I’m a worrier. Sometimes I lie awake at night, stressed about a test, a paper, money, or relationships.

I spend weeks worrying about a class. When I don’t hear from people for a few days, I worry that something has happened to them. I worry that I failed the assignment I just turned in, that I’m not going to get the job I need, that my friend’s health issues will become serious. I carry all these worries and try to take care of them myself. I take on responsibility for everything, as if thinking, obsessing, and worrying will change the situation.

“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?”
Luke 12:25–26 (NIV)

I know that worrying does nothing except to keep me focused on myself rather than on God. God created the entire universe. God created and sustains each and every one of us. Worrying is pointless when we worship a loving God, who has all things under control.
