Courageous Again

By: Mara Cobb [KY]

Monsters hiding under my bed never scared me.

As a kid, I would pick up frogs, hold ladybugs, and sleep without a nightlight. But as I grew up, I grew afraid. I began to wonder what people thought of me. Doubts crept into my mind: No one likes me. I’m not good enough. Talking to people began to make me nervous. I quit talking to almost everyone. As a Christian I knew I should reach out to others. I saw lonely kids at my church who needed a friend, but I didn’t feel as if I could do anything about it.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9b (NIV)

Then our youth group got new T-shirts with Joshua 1:9 printed on the front. That verse gave me strength to step out in spite of my fear. Our church provided a fellowship meal every Wednesday night. I had never been before, but Joshua 1:9 helped me muster up the courage to go. As I sat and talked with people I had shut out because I was afraid, I felt that God was right there with me. I felt courageous again.

NEED A REMINDER? Create a T-shirt, bracelet, hat, or locker poster using a Bible verse that gives you courage and reminds you of God’s presence.

Fill-In-The-Blank Prayer:

God, today I am afraid of __________. Give me courage and strength to __________. Thank you for being with me always. Amen.
