Under The Surface

By: Alina Kanaski [Tucson, AZ]

I’m complicated. Sometimes I love to be with people; sometimes I’d rather not.

Sometimes writing, school, or nature is my greatest passion; at other times I have no interest at all. I have fears and dreams I don’t know what to do with. Whenever I discover something new about myself, five more questions pop up. I’m complicated.

They will tell what is hidden in their hearts.
1 Corinthians 14:25a (CEV)

I forget that other people are complicated too. I’m content to see the façade they show me and close my eyes to the many layers under the surface: layers of fears, dreams, questions, and complications. They try to hide all the complicated parts of their lives, or I never look—or both.

We are all complicated. God didn’t make us cut-out figures, but complex human beings.

ACT ON IT: Reveal some of your complicated self—a fear, a dream, a secret—to someone you know, perhaps someone you are dating; and look for the depth in him or her. See people as God made them.
