The Voice of God

By: Lydia Nelson [Hamilton, NJ]

Sam was a kid when God called to him in the middle of the night, and Sam almost missed it.

He thought the call came from Eli, the priest for whom he worked. How surprising it must have been for Sam to learn that the voice was God’s and that God was calling to him!

And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
1 Samuel 3:10b (NRSV)

Sam probably thought, Why me? I’m just a kid. I don’t know much priestly stuff. I don’t know all that much about the Bible. I can’t speak well. No one will take me seriously.

But Eli did. Eli recognized that God was calling to Samuel. So Eli, a good mentor, helped Sam to recognize the Lord’s voice; and Sam grew up to be a wise and important prophet, on fire for the Lord.

God doesn’t always speak to the smartest, the bravest, the oldest. Sometimes God speaks to the young, the overlooked, the enthusiastic, the dreamers. Sometimes God’s voice can be hard to hear and understand, and we need help listening for it. Who are the people in your life who have helped to light the spark of faith in you? who have helped you listen for God and inspired you to follow?

5-SECOND PRAYER: Lord, please speak up. I’m listening.
