Have you experienced loss or a situation that caused you a great deal of pain?

Most of us have. Pain and loss are aspects of life that everyone encounters at some point. Whether a lost job, a friend’s moving away, or a pet’s death, loss hurts and letting go is not easy.

Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning.
Psalm 30:5b (NRSV)

When I was twelve years old, I lost my mom to cancer. Her death was abrupt and unexpected; the pain left me paralyzed. At times, my feelings were so intense that I didn’t know how to feel. Losing my mom caused me pain that I wasn’t aware existed. I felt stuck. The situation itself was awful, but accepting what had happened and moving on was even more challenging. Yet, I had to let go in order to move on. God helped me to see that loss is a part of life and that while it may be heartbreaking, dealing with the pain is necessary.

Have you experienced a loss that you have yet to move past? Is the pain too great for you to handle? Try giving the situation to God.

unable to move,
numbed by the pain
I feel deep in my heart.
It wasn’t supposed to be this way.
But by my side you stand.
My hand in yours gives me comfort.
I will make it through.
Once again I will rise.
This is not the end.
