Standing Up For Faith

By: Liza Mayer [Phoenix, AZ]

When I was 12, my parents went through a nasty divorce.

My dad would often attack my mom, my siblings, and me about our faith. Those attacks hurt!

[Jesus said,] “Simon, I have prayed that your faith will be strong. And when you have come back to me, help the others.”
Luke 22:32 (CEV)

Over time, my brother and I mustered enough courage to stand up to our father when he started attacking. We needed a lot of strength to battle our dad. I believe Jesus gave both of us the faith and courage we needed to be strong.

I’d like to say that my dad came to know Jesus after that, but he didn’t. He is still struggling with his anger. However, my faith has grown stronger through these experiences. And as I learn to trust the promise in Luke 22:32, I have found the courage to help others as well. God gives us strength to stand up for what we believe, even against those we love; and even in the midst of our trials, God can use us to strengthen others.

MUSTER COURAGE: What do you do when someone you love challenges what you believe? What does it mean to you to know that Jesus is praying that “your faith will be strong”?

Think About It

What are some challenges of being a parent? of being a teenager? How can you respect and honor each other?
