Setting Our Hearts On God

By: Greta Taylor [Marietta, GA]

Psalm 61:2b is most commonly quoted and cherished in times of trouble.

When we are facing the unfathomable, we find refuge in the solid rock that is our God.

When my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Psalm 61:2b (KJV)

I think God has another purpose in mind for this verse. We are called to run to God not only in the overwhelmingly bad times, but also in the overwhelmingly good times. Whether we are swimming in a sea of fear or joy, we can find strength and support in the rock that is Jesus Christ.

All too often, when life is going well, we find ourselves feeling independent of God. Our foolish hearts are quick to convince our minds that we don’t need God. Yet, the satisfaction and worth we find in our relationships, work, or social status won’t hold us up for long. When we put our ultimate hope in anything other than God, we surely will sink. But when, in every season and area of our lives, we say, “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I,” our hope cannot and will not be destroyed.

PRAYER: God, may our hearts always be set on you and may we look to you to lead us in all the days of our lives. Amen.
