Christ Crucified

In December 2015, as river levels rose, residents and business owners became concerned that the water level would breach the levee in my hometown.

As a precaution, an evacuation notice was issued. One of the local businesses, a grain elevator and hardware store that was owned by a family friend, began moving all their merchandise to higher ground. Employees, family members, and friends flocked to help.

After twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
Matthew 27:29 (NRSV)

While packing up the shop, I was scooping nails out of the bins as fast as I could. The points scratched, poked, and stabbed at my fingers. Amid the frenzy and chaos of the day, I had encountered Jesus.

REFLECT: When have you encountered Jesus unexpectedly—in a way that helped you better understand who he is?

Reflect on James 4:10 (NRSV):

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.” In what ways are you humble as Christ was humble?
