As a precaution, an evacuation notice was issued. One of the local businesses, a grain elevator and hardware store that was owned by a family friend, began moving all their merchandise to higher ground. Employees, family members, and friends flocked to help.
After twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
Matthew 27:29 (NRSV)
While packing up the shop, I was scooping nails out of the bins as fast as I could. The points scratched, poked, and stabbed at my fingers. After a few minutes, an idea hit me: The crown of thorns, the Crucifixion—I could hardly touch the nails with my bare hands, but Jesus had nails driven through his limbs. Amid the frenzy and chaos of the day, I had encountered Jesus.
REFLECT: When have you encountered Jesus unexpectedly—in a way that helped you better understand who he is?
