On The Rock

By: Rachael Elmers [South Lyon, MI]

In Matthew 7:24–27, Jesus warns us to build our lives upon a solid foundation.

I won’t pretend to be an angel.
I won’t pretend to be a saint.
I’m just like every one of you.
I struggle with my faith.
I try to face life on my own,
keeping distance from my God.
But without God’s rock on which to stand,
I am a silly fraud.
I know now that my way’s not right.
I shouldn’t push the Lord away.
I should be turning to God’s word
to guide me through each day.
So from now on, I’ll do my best
to change my messed up life,
to accept the loving gift of God
and end my self-wrought strife.

REFLECT: When life gets messy and painful, we might not feel like asking God for help. Maybe we’re ashamed of what we have done or think the mess we’re in is so big that asking God for help won’t change anything. But God is with us, even when we feel all alone. God never wants us to feel too ashamed or afraid to pray, to cry out for help, to ask for guidance. Prayer is a powerful, life-changing way to connect with the God who loves us. Talk to God today.

Ask God for Help:

Do you have a bad habit that you need to give up? If the thought of doing so is painful, ask the Lord to make you ready to let it go. God will not wrench it from you but will give you strength to loosen your grip.
